Bryan Doughty Hired to Lead WHS Girls Basketball Program

Woodbury High School is excited to announce Bryan Doughty as their new Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Bryan Doughty is replacing Megan Kirchenwitz who resigned after leading the Royals the past eight seasons.

Coach Doughty brings to Woodbury a strong knowledge of motivating players, improving talent,  teaching fundamentals and game strategy. His experience at the high school, college and youth levels will help our players in the youth and high school levels increase their passion for basketball while learning life skills through sports and being competitive.

Coach Doughty was the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Apple Valley Senior High since 2017. In his first season, he helped lead Apple Valley to their first section final appearance in 15 years. In 2019, he led Apple Valley to a 19-9 record and was named Head Coach of the year in section 3AAAA

Previously, Coach Doughty spent seven years working at White Bear Lake in the girls basketball program both with the high school and traveling program. Four of those years were as the varsity assistant on the girls basketball team, where they made two state tournament appearances in 2015 and 2016. In 2014, he was named assistant coach of the year for 4AAAA and coached in the Minnesota Girls High School All Star Game. In 2016-2017, Doughty was a Varsity Assistant with the Stillwater Area Boys Varsity Basketball program.

Graduating from Anoka High School, Doughty was a member of the 1992 State Tournament Championship Team and took second place in 1993. Bryan was a 1,000 point scorer and a finalist for Mr. Basketball. He went on to play at UW-Stout and later St. John’s University in Collegeville, where he appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament. When his playing career was over, he stayed at St. John’s to coach the men’s JV team for two years.

Coach Doughty has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Special Education with a teaching license in Academic and Behavior Strategist.

There will be a meet and greet hosted by the WHS Girls Basketball Booster Club to introduce Coach Doughty to WHS Girls Basketball Families on Tuesday, May 24, in the lecture hall at 6 PM. Returning players, new players and incoming 9th grade (2022-2023) families are encouraged to attend. Enter the South Entrance to access the Lecture Hall.
