Mission Statement

Instill program’s core values of hard work, accountability, teamwork, toughness and responsibility

Purpose Statement

I use athletics and coaching to teach student athletes the same core values I was taught by my great mentors that will give them skills to be successful at Woodbury High School and in life!

In this section I hope to have a weekly recap for each of the teams.  However, sometimes the schedule will get crazy and I will get a little behind, so I cannot promise how in depth or regular the updates will be.

9th Grade:  The 9th grade group had two games this week vs. very good competition.  Despite two losses, this group showed some great potential.  A couple late turnovers doomed us in the first game vs. Lakeville North in a tight loss and Minnetonka hit a 3 pointer in the last few seconds to beat us on Friday afternoon.  The guys are practicing hard and competing tough against good teams.  There are great lessons to be learned from both games.  Every possession matters and it definitely shows in the close losses.

B-Squad:  The 10th grade team had a tough season opening game over at Lakeville North on Thursday.  It definitely looked like it was the first game for us!  This happens early on in the season when we are playing against some teams that have already played several games.   With a quick turnaround the next day at Minnetonka the team responded with a terrific defensive performance to earn a great win over Minnetonka's 10th grade team.  It was great to see them respond to a tough loss.  That is a sign of growth and maturity!

JV:  The JV guys only were able to play 1 game this week as we didn't play any lower level games on Saturday in the Breakdown at Hopkins.  The first half was full of many good plays and we quickly learned that in order to beat a good team you need to be able to sustain it for two halves.  I'm confident this group will start to put together longer stretches of quality play in the coming weeks.  Practice the next two weeks for this group is even more important than the games.

Varsity:   One of the strengths of our program culture is the idea of we over me and doing whatever is best for the team...whatever it takes to help the team win.  It's not a quality that comes easily...especially in a society centered around the individual and instant gratification.  I can assure you this will be a major focus for our program.  This was not the opening to the season we were hoping for.  We've been spoiled the last two years with some big wins over top ranked opponents.  This year can still be the same, but we have a long list of things to improve on.  This group is very capable and with a commitment to improved defense and competing, every guy on every play, at a much higher level, we can get where we want to go.  Dealing with adversity has been a strength of our program in previous years and this week provided plenty of it, but we didn't respond the way I think we will soon.  It will be great to have our whole roster back at all practices and games this week and we are hoping to see improved play in a big week with 3 huge games.

And on a program wide note, we are very please with how all of our players finished up academically in Trimester 1!  Let's keep that going during Trimester 2
