Kent Getzlaff-Head Coach

Kent Getzlaff became the 3rd Head Coach in Woodbury High School Boys Basketball history in May, 2014.

Coach Getzlaff, with a record of 113-100, and his staff are excited for the 2023-24 season.   During Getzlaff's seven seasons his teams have been the Suburban East Conference Champions three times.   His teams have finished in the top 3 in the Suburban East 5 out of 7 years.  Getzlaff has been the Suburban East Conference Coach of the Year three times, 2015, 2016, 2021 and also the Section 4AAAA Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016 and 2019, 2021

Coach Getzlaff will be entering his 22nd year coaching basketball.  He began his career right here at Woodbury High School coaching the JV team from 2002-2004.  His next stop was the Head Coach at South St. Paul High School from 2004-2008.  After the 2008 season in SSP, he jumped to the collegiate ranks as the assistant coach at NCAA Division II Concordia University, St. Paul for 5 seasons.

Getzlaff is a graduate of Park High School and graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul (2002) after a 4-year basketball playing career.  He teaches a variety of history courses at Woodbury High School.  He resides in Woodbury with his wife Mary and daughters Payton (18) and Reese (16).

Burt Roberts-Varsity Assistant

Coach Roberts has been the Varsity Assistant Coach for 12 seasons and has over 30 years of coaching experience in football, basketball and track & field.  Coach Roberts is also the Defensive Coordinator of the Royals Football Team.  Coach Roberts was the "Butch Nash" Award Winner as the Assistant Football Coach of the Year in 2015!

Coach Roberts is from International Falls, MN and graduated from Minnesota State Moorhead after a standout career on the football field.  He's in his 30th year of teaching and is currently a 5th grade teacher at Woodbury Elementary.

Coach Roberts lives in Woodbury with wife Diana and enjoys the time he gets to spend with their two daughters and their grandaughter!

Sammy Ricks-Varsity Assistant / Junior Varsity Head Coach

Sammy Ricks just finished his 9th season as a varsity assistant after spending two seasons on the staff at Park High School.  Sammy comes to Woodbury after a terrific playing career in high school at St. Paul Johnson and college at North Dakota School of Science and Concordia University, St. Paul.  Sammy played in 3 state tournaments for legendary coach Vern Simmons at Johnson and finished his career starting over 30 games in two season at Concordia.  

Sammy is a Cultural Liason for District 833, spending his time at Woodbury High School and Cottage Grove Middle School, mentoring many of our students.  Sammy lives in Woodbury with wife Yvonne and daughters Daelyn (12), Taryn (8) and Jordyn (5),

Greg Schmitz-10th Grade Coach & Varsity Assistant

Coach "Schmitty" has spent 21 seasons coaching basketball at Woodbury under Scott Swansson and Kent Getzlaff.  He's been coaching football at Woodbury for the past 21 seasons.  Schmitty is a staple in the Woodbury Athletic Program coaching several high school sports and also coaches football, basketball and baseball in the Woodbury Athletic Association.  

Schmitty is from Fairmont High School and graduated from UW La Crosse. He teaches physical education at Woodbury Middle School.  

He lives in Woodbury with his wife Carissa and son Braedon (19) and daughter Kaylee (15).

Ryan Knutson-9th Grade Coach & Varsity Assistant

Coach Knutson just finished his 21st season coaching basketball in District #833.  His current role is the 9th grade Boys coach, JV Baseball coach and 10th grade football coach.  He serves a vital role for all 3 programs. Coach Knutson is from Prairie Farm, WI and teaches 6th grade social studies at Lake Middle School.  He's a self-proclaimed 3 point assassin...but every team he's coached adamantly disputes the claim.  Coach Knutson lives in Woodbury with his wife Shannon and daughter Ava (19) and son Parker (14)
