2014 Inductees


Dan Cavanagh

Dan Cavanagh

During his time at Woodbury High School, Dan Cavanagh excelled in a wide-range of student activities from choir and math league to tennis and music ensembles.

An active member of the WHS Student Council and National Honor Society, Dan provided exceptional leadership and service to his classmates and the Woodbury community.  He was a talented member of the jazz band, choir, and multiple theatre productions that showcased his skills on the piano.  He earned three varsity letters on the tennis team, and demonstrated great leadership and pride in WHS by organizing the "Loyal Royals Fan Club."

After graduating from Woodbury High School, Dan attended St. Olaf College where he earned his undergraduate degree in Theory/Composition.  He then attended the University of Oregon where he earned a master's of music defree in jazz studies.  

Currently an author and Music Professor at University of Texas at Arlington, Dan has continued to share his talents on the piano as a composer garnering numerous awards including Winner of the International Music Prizes for Excellence in Composition 2009, and a First Music Commission from the New York Symphony Jazz Band Classic program.  Fan is married to wide, Valerie and is father to three wonderful children.  


Gary Halvorson

Gary Halvorson

Gary "Hal" Halvorson was a teacher and coach in District 833 from 1976 to 2010.  After becoming the Woodbury High School head football coach in 1987, Coach Hal guided the team to the school's first conference championship in 1991 and a big-school state championship in 1998.  

Hal's leadership went beyond the gridiron as his vision lead to many improvements within WHS and throughout the entire district.  In the late 1980's, the construction of a co-ed training room, weight room, and varsity team meeting room called The Lion's Den were all built thanks to Hal.  

In 1996 Hal started Royal Pride. based on the nationally renowned character education program, "Coaching to Change Lives." Following the success of implementing the Royal Pride program at WHS, Coach Hal took a leave from District 833 in 2000 to become a national "Coaching to Change Lives" presenter.

In addition to coaching football, Coach Hal was involved with apline racing, track & field and started the boys and girls intramural program for strength and conditioning with 80-100 students participating annually.  

Married 42 years to Barb Halvorson, Hal enjoys fishing, golf, wood working, walking and building their retirement home in northwestern Ontario on Rainy Lake.  


Ann (Lindberg) Menier

Ann (Lindberg) Menier

During her time at Woodbury High School, Ann Lindberg excelled in the arts - honing her strengths in theatre, declamation, choir and jazz band.  As a result, Ann earned the opportunity to represent WHS at the state level in theatre, choir and declamation.  

In theater at WHS, she received the District 833 Award and earned a star rating at the state theater competition for her performance in "Big Dipper".  Ann also participated at state in declamation three times, taking 4th as a junior, 7th as a senior, and 8th as a freshman.  As a stand-out performer, Ann was recognized with the District 833 Award for her accomplishments in declamation.  

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Ann was an active leader in the Woodbury High School National Honor Society and voted senior class president in 1994.  In 1998, Ann graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in English and a degree in Nursing from the University f of St. Catherine.  She is currently a Registered Nurse at Children's Hospital of Minnesota and is studying to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

Ann is married to Matt Menier, and they have 3 children: Will, Berit and Sophia.  


Katie (Oien) Jones

Katie (Oien) Jones

After joining the Woodbury High School varsity swim team in 7th grade, Katie Oien earned multiple top-finishes while setting records throughout her high school and college careers.

Katie was named All-conference four times and All-State three times as a in sophomore, junior and senior.  As a 10th grader, she set the Minnesota state record in the  100-yard backstroke and would go on to win that same event at the state swim meet in both her sophomore and junior seasons. Katie was also recognized nationally in her sophomore year being named to the High School Swimming All-America First Team 100-yard backstroke.

In addition to all her individual accomplishments, Katie h the WHS girls swim team win the overall Minnesota State Championship in 1991. As a senior in 1993, Katie again played an important role in bringing another overall state championship to the WHS girls swim team, Katie feels honored to have been part of her high school teams and privileged to be coached by Duane Sorenson during her high school career.  

After high school, Katie attended lowa State University and was a member of its swim team for four years. She set the ISU school record in the women's 200-yard backstroke as a freshman. Katie also was named to the dean's list, recognized as a high scholarship student-athlete, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1997. In 2000, she earned a Master of Science in Psychology from Iowa State University.

Katie is married to Mark Jones, who also graduated from lowa State and played on the ISU tennis team, Katie and Mark have two children: Elizabeth and Lars.  


Bill Schiffler

Bill Schiffler

In 1983, High School boys basketball team won the Minnesota Class AA state championship. On the court, the team was led by 2014 Hall of Fame inductee Bill On the sideline, his father, 2012 WHS Hall of Fame inductee Del Schiffler, was the head coach.

Bill was In addition to helping Woodbury win its only boys basketball state title, Today named First Team All-State, All-Metro and Honorable Mention on the All-USA junior Basketball Team. Bill was also an All-Conference basketball player in both his and senior seasons.

Bill's talents were not confined to the basketball court. He was also a two-year varsity football player, was named to the 1983 Metro football team, and garnered Conference honors as a senior Bill showed his athletic versatility as a varsity track and field athlete as a junior and a varsity stand-out in baseball as a senior.

After graduating from WHS, Bill attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he played basketball for four years and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987.

Bill is married to wife Diana, and they have 6 children: Erica and Zach Vance (daughter/son in law), Bo Schiffler (son), Cody Fleury (stepson), Casey Fleury (stepson), Courtney Schiffler (daughter) and Tavia Low (stepdaughter). 


Jennifer "Twink" Starr

Jennifer "Twink" Starr

Jennifer "Twink" Starr shined as choral director at Oltman and Woodbury Middle Schools and then at Woodbury High School from 1978-2001. While completing a master's degree and doctoral coursework at the University of Illinois, Twink worked closely with fellow 833 district music teachers and school leaders to build a secondary co-curricular music program of unmatched quality and integrity.

During Ms. Starr's tenure, Woodbury choirs performed for local business and service organizations, church and school board meetings, and various civic celebrations, including the Paul Winter Carnival and Holidazzle Parade. WHS choirs frequently traveled to New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal and the Bahamas to participate in choral They brought home multiple "superior" ratings from nationally recognized conductors and clinicians.

Twink also served three terms as the music representative on the Minnesota State High School League Board and two terms on the Minnesota Choral Directors' Association Board as East Metro Chair. She provided exceptional leadership and support for state, and section music performance opportunities for high region, school students throughout the state, in 2001, Ms. Starr was named outstanding Secondary Music Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Music Educators' Association.

In addition to recognizing her sisters Spark Rorvick and Barb Starr, and their families, students as well as parents along with WHS administration and staff, Twink wishes to extend special thanks to district music and theatre colleagues Dwayne Tannahill, Karen and Jon Seashore, and Jan Gilbertson for accompanying her on this life-long adventure.  Twink is currently the Director of Youth Choirs at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, and also embraces a latest talent and new passion watercolor and acrylic painting.
