2012 Inductees

Del Schiffler

Del was a math teacher and a coach for 38 years.  He was Head Basketball Coach at Melrose High School (1971-1975) and Woodbury High School (1975-2000).  He had 6 State Tournament appearances as head coach and won 2 Girls AAU National Basketball Titles.  He was the only coach in AAU history to win 2 National Titles.  He had a career basketball record of 484-165 (75% winning percentage) over 29 years.  He was a 2 time Coach of the Year while at Woodbury, won numerous conference championships, and was inducted into the Minnesota Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.  He was inducted into the Minnesota Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007.  

Minnesota Basketball lost a great coach, and a great person when Coach Schiffler passed away in the fall of 2000.  Del and his wide Sue have 3 children: Del R., Bill and Lori, and six grandchildren (Erica, Bo & Courtney Schiffler and Kayla, Jake & Brady Bilski).

Mary Vaaler

Mary Vaaler

Following graduation from Woodbury High School as Salutatorian of the class of 1983, Mary Vaaler attended Luther College, where she studied voice and sang with the Nordic Choir, under the direction of Weston Noble.  She was an active recitalist and soloist, imcluding Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem, and performed in many dance and theater productions, including the role of Juliette in  Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette.  She graduated in 1987, Summa cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.  She pursued graduate studies at the University of Connecticut, receiving her Master's degree in 1991.

Mary has sung with a number of choral groups and remains active as a performer with the Woodbury Community Theater, co-coordinates the Woodbury Choral Festival, and volunteers with the Loft Stage at East Ridge High School.  Mary and her husband, WHS classmate Tim Reimann, were married in 1988, and are the proud parents of four children: Tom, Julia, Anna, and Jack.

Chip is the Head Football Coach at Pequot Lakes High School, and currently resides in Crosslake, MN with his wife, Kari, and Daughters Chelsea, Morgan, Sannah, and Macie

 


Kathryn Hughes

Kathryn Hughes

Kate is a former LPGA Tour Player who toured the world and has 2 top 10 finishes in the U.S. and 1 victory in Japan.  She graduated from WHS in 1985 and attended the University of Minnesota, where she not only received her B.S. in Business Administration and a Minor in Psychology at the Carlson School of Management, but also was a top 5 nationally ranked player in Division I NCAA College Golf.  

She had many successes and awards at the UofM: 7 Collegiate victories, 2 Big 10 Individual Championship, 3- time NCAA All-American, 3-time NCAA Academic All-American, 3-Time All Big 10 Team, and Big 10 Female Athlete of the Year.  After Kate retired from competitive golf, she received multiple awards as a medical specialist for two Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical companies bringing awareness to mental health education.  Today, she has her own business dedicated to improving the mental strength of world class athletes, but her most important role is as a mother and wife.  


Michelle Sherman

Michelle Sherman

Michelle D. Sherman graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1992 where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.  She obtained a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri-Clolumbia in 1997.  

As Directorof the the Family Mental Health Program at the Oklahoma City VA hospital and Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center for the past 18 years, Michelle has dedicated her career to serving veterans and their families.  She created a family education program, the SAFE Program, which has been disseminated to VA medical centers across the country, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Michelle also co-chaired the American Psychological Association's Presidential Task Force on Military Deployment Services for Youth, Families and Service Members.  

In her personal life, Michelle is honored to write award-winning books with her mother, DeAnne Sherman, that provide education and support for military teenagers and their families.  


Doug Schneider

Douglas C. Schneider

One of the most versatile musicians of his generation, Douglas performs across the United States as an organist, pianist, harpsichordist, saxophonist and conductor in musical styles ranging from medieval music to contemporary jazz.  He is the Organist at St. Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, having previously served as the Assistant Organist/Conductor at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral.  A specialist in 20th century French organ music as well as music of the Baroque, Mr. Schneider performs the complete Bach organ works.  Having an impressive background as an improvising jazz musician, he carries om the liturgical tradition of improvisation at the organ.  Douglas is also the Assistant Director of Opera, Instructor of Saxophone, and Co-Coordinator of the Piano Department at Portland State University.  

He is married to mezzo-soprano Shaelyn Schneider and is the blessed father of Catherine, Joseph and John.  Douglas is an Oblate of Saint Benedict, associated with Mount Angel Abbey.  He graduated as valedictorian from both Lawrence University and Woodbury High School.
