The Woodbury wrestlers continued their dominance over East Ridge in the quarterfinal round of the Section 3 team tournament on Friday, but fell to Eagan in a semifinal matchup.
Against East Ridge, Cole West won a tough decision and Brady Moesenthin won by fall to get the Royals out to an early 9-0 lead. Dante Knox registered his first varsity win at 138 and decisions by MJ Okada and Gavin Bradley got the Royals back ahead at 18-15. A fall by Zane Schaffer, decisions by Andrew French, Donald Nde, a major decision by John Gardiner and a decision by Max Fick provided the margin of victory in a 43-15 win by the Royals.
Eagan, the #2 seed, proved to be tough at a number of matchups. West and Moesenthin got the Royals out in front again, 7-0, with a decision and major. But 4 consecutive falls and a decision victory by Eagan put them out front, 27-7. Okada, Austin Braun, Nde and French won by decision, cutting the lead to 33-19. John Gardiner then won by fall, but the damage in earlier matches was too much for the Royals to overcome in the 39-25 Eagan victory.
Congratulations to the Hastings Raiders in winning the team section title.
Up Friday and Saturday is the Section 3 individual tournament. Action starts at 4:30pm on Friday at East Ridge HS.
